CSC - Meeting Recap for November 15, 2016

December 07, 2016

The Content Strategy Committee met in person on November 15, 2016. The CSC discussed 2016 and 2017 license renewals and various other projects.

Attendees: Todd Mundle, Gabrielle Prefontaine, Tony Horava, Stéphanie Gagnon (by phone), Tanja Harrison, Pamela Jacobs, Denise Koufogiannakis, Lisa Petrachenko, Jennifer Richard, Harriet Rykse (by phone), Benoit Séguin, and Peter Webster

Management Report

A written report was shared with the committee. Highlights included an update on the Center for Research Libraries’ successful Mellon Foundation grant for the development of the Global Resources Collection, CRKN’s participation in a Library and Archives Canada-led working group on developing national strategies for the digitization of heritage materials, and the upcoming ORCID license. Updates also included staffing changes as well as the CRKN website.

Review of CSC Member Terms

An updated overview of the CSC members and the terms of their appointments was discussed with the committee. It was noted that most member terms have been aligned and will now end in December.

Journal Usage Project

D. Purdy shared an update on the Journal Usage Project on behalf of K. Silk. CRKN is working with 8 institutions whose ethics reviews are still outstanding. The final results of the study will be available in May 2017.

2016 License Renewals

The committee discussed several licenses and partnerships that are currently being renewed:

  • Taylor and Francis (expires December 31, 2016)
  • eBOUND-ACUP license (expires December 31, 2016)
  • Érudit partnership (expires December 31, 2016)

The committee also received updates on the Oxford and Cambridge reconciliations.

Review of AGM Licensing Session Feedback

The committee reviewed feedback received from the membership during the AGM Licensing session, and agreed that with the IM toolkit and the JUP results next year, CRKN should work with member institutions to raise awareness and support from faculty and administrations.

Committee members also discussed potential member engagement strategies for the 2017 license renewals.

“Opt-Out” Task Group – Terms of Reference Brainstorm

Another outcome of the Licensing 2017 session at the AGM was for CRKN to explore possibilities of creating a system to best assist members who can no longer participate in the full "Big Deal". One suggestion was to form a task group exploring this issue reporting to the CSC. The committee agreed that a task group should be formed and that a member of the CSC will chair it.

2017 CSC Meeting Schedule

An overview of CSC meetings anticipated for 2017 was reviewed with the committee and members were asked to provide their availability.
